Last year we were on pasture at this time.
Woke up to the higher elevations already covered from overnight...
It started snowing in earnest while I was out buying some extra hay...
Not sticking yet, but the temps are still dropping. Local forecast is for “2-4 inches, locally greater accumulations up to 8 inches”
yay. :|

Will you pasture them at all if the snow covering is light enough that they can reach the grass , or do you just give them hay and keep them in regardless? I realize that several inches is not that scenario.

Y es, they can graze through some snow, though typically this is something we expect to encounter at the END of the grazing season, with exper ie nced grazers. Lambs who have not been on past ure before will be confused and put-off by snow on the grass, eat ing grass from the ground is already a “new thing” for them. For the start of the season we will keep them in and feed hay, rather than exposing the lambs to a doubly-confusing new experience. Sheep are surprisingly smart, but they are not terribly good at integrating multiple new experiences simultaneously .
